Should Turkey join the Europen Community?

Question

Should Turkey join the Europen Community?
I mean, what is European other than the lump of rock this side of the Bosporus? Certainly not the culture of the people living on it. What you think out there?

Answer

Ive always been puzzled about the assignment of Turkey to Asia. In the past it has been referred to as the sick man of Europe. The countries on the northern shores of the Black Sea are considered to be European. Ukraine, Georgia. Turkey is a member of NATO and has very little to do with the North Atlantic.brOn a more serious note, the alternative doesnt bear thinking about. Turkey is a secular state. Even though of the population is Muslim, their day of rest is Sunday, not Friday.brThey are, however a proud nation and rejection would give strength to the more fundamentalist faction. Does Europe really want Turkey to look to the East?brGreece and Portugal had economic problems when they joined the EU, and Bulgaria and Roumania are certainly not yet economically in the same league as the western European States.brAnd then, always at the bottom of the list of objections, there is the question of human rights.brMy view is that rejection would be more problematic than acceptance, and half my family is Kurdish Turk.

Should The Tolerant...Tolerate The Intolerant?

Question

Should The Tolerant...Tolerate The Intolerant?

Answer

I tolerate the intolerant. I try hard to see the viewpoints of others, even if I feel that viewpoint is closed minded or incorrect. I may not agree that something is a certain way, but Im able to put myself in anothers shoes to see why theyd come to that conclusion.brbrHowever tolerating something doesnt mean LIKING or AGREEING with it. I do not care for people who are intolerant as I dont feel its the way to live. But ... I do tolerate them and let them live their own lives.

Should the concept of creation science AND the theory of evolution science be taught in public schools?

Question

Should the concept of creation science AND the theory of evolution science be taught in public schools?
I am writing a research paper on this topic and I am trying to get feedback from people around the globe. I want to know what you think and why.

Answer

Creationism is not backed by a plethora of scientific studies. Its backed by a plethora of nonscientific studies. Scientific studies do not rely on selectively ignoring conflicting facts in order to quotprovequot a theory as the creationist theory. Scientific studies do not claim nonreliability in a technique such as dating at one point, while claiming reliabilty in the same technique when it supports a theory.brbrScientific studies that are not conducted with objectivity or scientific methods should not be taught. Hence, creationism should not be taught.brbrUsing your analogy, teaching creationism would not be like teaching children they have a right and left hand, it would be like teaching children they have three hands.brbrBut Ill say one thing, if creationism is allowed to be taught, Ill be sure that all origins of creation theories are taught, including the HOPI, Mayan, Chinese, Satanic, and Greek Mythologies that contribute to creation theory. I like the Hopi version where we all had tails and came from the center of the Earth! While I dont agree the theories are valid, I applaud your interest in fair treatment of creationism.

Should I finish reading Twilight?

Question

Should I finish reading Twilight?
I started reading it and got a little over pages through. Its not really my style though and I cant quite get into it. I dont know if I have the patients to finish it but Im kind of OCD about not.

Answer

Well, people usually get hooked onto this particular book in the beginning. If youre not interested, you might as well put it down. I do know how people can be I know two people who absolutely have to finish every book they start, no matter how much they dislike it. If you really feel you cant go without finishing it, I suppose you should. But it doesnt get much better after the first pages.brbrJust see how resistant you can be to reading more of it. If you find you have to finish it, finish it. If youre okay with not finishing it, youll have saved yourself a few hours of your life.

Should freedom of expression be curtailed? Give your reasons?

Question

Should freedom of expression be curtailed? Give your reasons?
Taslima Nasrin has revoked controversial lines from her book because she was asked to. Should a writer draw a line when writing about sensitive topics or is artistic license a writers right? What do you think?

Answer

I think in any reasonable, realworld application of the idea of freedom of expression, it should be completely unencumbered by any limiting policies.brbrWhat I mean by in the real world is that, of course, if a book were powerful enough to, say, invariably draw its readers to suicide or murder, it should not be allowed. But I think the possibility of words themselves being that immediately powerful on the human mind is very distant in our future, if at all possible.brbrRealworld, functional repercussions are the only ones I could see mattering in terms of censorship. But then you have to contend with what are still realworld impacts, but long term ones. Say, for example, that a child ends up running a militaristic organization against a particular race and the cause was his reading quotMain Kampfquot as a young one? Unfortunately, I dont think we have the capacity to censor that, if we are to otherwise live free. I think the possible, slow, seepinglike repercussions of reading on peoples lives must rely on an otherwise effective society to be shaped.brbrThat is to say, a society such as, say, modern France or Ireland is better equipped to deal with the kind of in my opinion outrageous notions in books like quotMein Kampf, quot because they temper them with the conditioning of far less violent societies than modern America. I am not arguing for the superiority of those countries, simply using them as an illustration of how the slower mindshaping style of books is best dealt with by the mindshaping of other aspects of society, and not ever by the elimination of any free speech itself.brbrNote if it is true that Nasrin flagrantly insulted Muslims for no reason, I agree that removing it was by far the best move on her part, unless those insults had a true and substantial artistic purpose. Generally, blatant insults dont. Regardless, I disagree that someone should not have the right to insult a group... they should have the legal right to, even if it is useless. The idea of making a law against something is a different issue from whether or not that thing is wise or useful.

Am I the only person in the world who doesnt like Twilight?

Question

Am I the only person in the world who doesnt like Twilight?
Please tell me im not to keep me sane. Cos I am absoloutely sick of hearing about that book and the film or whatever.

Answer

No, your not alone. Things like twilight, jonas brothers, hannah montana, etc, are all fads that pre teens are into, mostly because the good things require some brain work to understand, something they obviously lack. so books like twilight are simple to read, and therefore much loved. after twilight itll be another dumb book, and after the jonas brothers another sappy band. maybe theyll grow out of it, and start reading books and listening to music to their own tastes, not what the current fad is.

Am I humble if I say Im humble?

Question

Am I humble if I say Im humble?

Answer

The answer is NO. a person who is truly humble will never mention it, and let alone never think of it as a goal. a humble person is someone who does good and what not for no recognition, and by calling yourself humble you are calling forth recognition. But this does not always mean you are a bad person or anything, but just that you still have some growing to do in your cause.

A Harry Potter Fan Question?

Question

A Harry Potter Fan Question?
Ok, well you know how Harry is in Gryffindor but what if Harry had been chosen into the Slytherin House? Do you think that Snape would have been nicer to Harry is he was in Slytherin?

Answer

No. I dont think so. Perhaps a little...but not much. He still would have treated Harry worse than the rest of the people in Slytherin, but he would have been treated better than the people in other houses. brbrRegardless of his house, Harry still looks exactly like his father. Besides his eyes, of course! His eyes are all Lily! Professor Snape has a one track mind. He would not be persuaded that Harry wasnt like his father.
